For anyone, to travel far country is
like a dream. When Sejla Kameric told her visit to Japan, lots of her friends
in Bosnia were surprised, and says, “it’s like a dream!”
However, once someone visits any far country, this is not a dream anymore. Just reality is waiting for you. You will face with the difference of language and culture. From that context, Sejla Kameric tried to find her own artistic expression during her stay in Tokyo and Kyoto.
Kameric has been interested in twists of language. "Sejla-san (means Ms. Sejla in Japanese)" means “Sejla Dream” in her native language. Therefore, her name has been called as "Sejla Dream" in Japan. Dream has been one of the most important subjects in her art making; such as Dream House and Daydreaming. However, she have never used the word "san," which means “dream” in her own language.
In this work, Sejla-san / セイラ 夢 / Sejla Dream, Sejla Kameric, a Bosnian Girl, disguise as Japanese Geisha Girl.
In her work "Bosnian Girl", she dealt with the idea of prejudice, especially toward Bosnian women. In this work, she projected the prejudice of people toward Japanene (= Samurai and Geisha), and she sublimated this topic through the level of art.
In these photos, you can see her old works, which mainly dealt with her identity issue. In these five photos, she tries to cross over the identity issue of herself and the stereotype images from different perspectives.
These are 5 set of postcards, and these were shipped to the people all over the world. On the opening date of her exhibition in Kitakyushu on June 18th, 2005, as an opening performance, she signed and send these postcards all over the world.
